SOCIOLOGY & IDENTITY
For this project, we studied sociology, which is the way society shapes individuals, and how sociology affects us personally. We studied many different areas of sociology including:
- Feral Children
- The Looking Glass Self
- Agents of Socialization
- Social Identity Categories
- Social Norms
- Folkways, Mores, and Taboos
- Agent and Target Groups
- Invisible Knapsack
We also had to write an essay and create a mask based on how we feel society affected us. Here is a sample of my essay:
Before I open my mouth to speak, I am judged. People form opinions on me before they know who I am for the simple fact that I am female. In today’s society, negative stereotypes surround women and girls, the “weaker sex.” Pressure is put on us to conform to society’s view of perfection from the moment we are born. Some of us conform willingly, others more subconsciously, but no matter what, there are parts of ourselves that were formed based on the different ideals in our society. I remember talking with friends and realizing how differently I act when I first meet someone. I smile a lot and try to act warm and friendly. I even use a higher voice to appear more feminine. ..

1. Now that you have finished your first project, how is Project Based Learning (PBL) different from or similar to what you have experienced before? Give at least 3 specific ways it is similar or different.
After completing the first project, the differences between PBL and traditional learning have become clearer. In Project Based Learning, the focus in on making sure that the information stays with you. In past school experiences, the learning revolved around memorizing facts, rules, and formulas that were relevant to the subject we were studying before taking a test and moving on. Looking back, I barely retain any information that I learned this way. Project Based Learning is also different because we are making personal connections to the content through the process of creation to completion, making it easier to understand what we are learning about. Not only that, but whatever we create, we have to stand by. These projects aren’t something that only our teachers and maybe parents will see. Whatever we create will be displayed to the public, pushing us to make sure we recognize connections to subject matter and life, and making us work that much harder to refine our projects and concepts.
