MODEL UNITED NATIONS
This unit focused on learning the proceedings and procedure of an actual United Nations conference, as well as getting us involved in Current Events. The first conference, taking place on February 6th, focused on the Israeli/Palestine conflict and the Palestinian refugee crisis. The delegates wrote resolutions on possible solutions to the refugee crisis, such as ways to fairly compensate the refugees and neighboring countries, and if the right of return should be applied. As a chair, I was more involved in running the conference than writing resolutions. My duties as chair of the conference were to: write an issue brief for the delegates, detailing the history of the issue, UN involvement, bloc positions, etc; I learned Parliamentary Procedure in order to run the conference more smoothly, i.e. how to proceed from roll call to debate, how to open the speaking list; I made sure all of the delegates were prepared, having a copy of the docket and Parliamentary Procedure with them at debate, as well as any supporting evidence they may have needed. The second conference on February 27th focused on the Iranian Nuclear Weapon Crisis. This time, the delegates' resolutions were based upon the proper plan of action in the case of Iran's possession of a nuclear weapon, and whether sanctions were helping or hurting the situation, as well as whether Iran should be allowed to continue their nuclear program.
