1. What are you most proud of about this conference?
I am most proud of how smoothly Marley and I were able to run the conference. We were both very nervous about being able to keep things under control, but overall, things went very well. |
In my opinion, the strength in my op-ed lies in the moral and political philosophy content. Initially, I had a great deal of trouble connecting my argument to a moral philosophy, and the newness of the technology for genetic engineering made it difficult to apply the ideas of the Constitution. To remedy this, I focused on forming my opinion and finding evidence to support my statements, and chose a moral philosophy to apply after I had written my essay in its entirety. By using this method, I was able to craft strong moral philosophy connections in the ideas of John Rawls, and find legal connections outside of the Constitution. As I wrote, “Genetic engineering threatens the idea of justice as seen by John Rawls, who argued that the roots of justice are fairness and equality. Rawls used the idea of moral arbitrariness to define justice, stating that the treatment of an individual should not be based upon social position or physical characteristics with which they are endowed from birth. ”

Before I open my mouth to speak, I am judged. People form opinions on me before they know who I am for the simple fact that I am female. In today’s society, negative stereotypes surround women and girls, the “weaker sex.” Pressure is put on us to conform to society’s view of perfection from the moment we are born. Some of us conform willingly, others more subconsciously, but no matter what, there are parts of ourselves that were formed based on the different ideals in our society. I remember talking with friends and realizing how differently I act when I first meet someone. I smile a lot and try to act warm and friendly. I even use a higher voice to appear more feminine.

I awoke in an orange haze,
laughter bubbling into my consciousness like the simmer of the soup on the stove. I was young then. Young enough to slip into a dream on the couch and wake up in my own bed, transported by magic and unseen hands. ... I can remember running my tongue against my loose tooth until it fell out and all that was left was a missing piece of my smile that made me whistle when I talked. Young enough that I had to hop to get into the swing; young enough that my feet didn’t touch the ground. How carefree a world before I learned I could not fly. How lovely was youth, when today was laying in the cool grass and the future was just another cloud illuminated by the setting sun. |
